Letter: Legislators, put our money where your mouth is

The state of Utah has discovered it has a possible $1 billion budget surplus and the governor is suggesting a tax cut for all Utahns as the best way to handle these extra funds.

A nice idea, but why not use this amazing surplus to do something amazing and fund the Medicaid expansion? The concern over a possible $13 million shortfall could easily be rectified with $50 million of the surplus.

To be really clever, how about pushing $100 million toward schools and teacher salaries? We hear that education in Utah is a high priority — now is the time to stop talking and let some big money do the talking.

Finally, give the remainder of the surplus to residents who have incomes in the lowest 30 to 40 percent bracket. These are the people who truly need a tax cut.

Mr. Governor and legislators, please put our money where your mouth is.

Dave Jensen, Draper
