A 49-year-old Utah snowmobiler was killed Saturday after being buried by an avalanche in Summit County.
The avalanche occurred east of Coalville just before 1:30 p.m. The snowmobiler’s avalanche beacon notified officials of the avalanche, though two friends actually pulled him from the snow, according to a news release from Summit County Sheriff’s Department.
The friends administered CPR to the snowmobiler for about 40 minutes until a Department of Public Safety helicopter arrived. The man was flown to a hospital in Evanston, Wyo., where he died. The Sheriff’s Department has not released the man’s name.
Authorities estimate the avalanche was 500 to 600 feet wide and 4 to 10 feet deep.
Including this man, at least four have died in avalanches this year in Utah. The last recorded avalanche-related fatality before those deaths was in January 2016.
